Here is a great demo of CO2 ‘s application to clean up the spilled oil (seeing the oil and the clean up at the end is important):
Instead of picking up 6″ of sand, just a quarter of an inch needs to be picked up. Greatly reducing cleanup efforts and costs.
Benefits are that we have a ton of it already in the environment, it is a natural biproduct of many industrial processes, and when applied to oil appears to freeze, aggregate, and separate oil from sand and water.
It appears to work well with fine oil (low viscosity).
From a previous demonstration on CNN, the CO2 technique appeared to work even better with the more tar-like oil present in the BP/Deep Horizon spill. See here:
